nfante Don Pedro de Portusal in Lima por I'RANCIS M. ROGERS Dean of Dept. of Rcmance Languages, Harvard University The Libro del Infante don Pedro de Portugal: el qual anduuo las quafro partidas del mundo is a faatastic late medieval travel narrative written by one Gómez de Santisteban. For several years 1 have been attempting to draw up as complete a list as possible of al1 the editions in which it has appeared. 1 have consulted every conceivable printed source of information. 1 have taken advantage of trips to Europe, to Brazil, and throughout the United States to visit libraries. It was my August, 1954, visit to the Ciudad de los Reyes, however, that turned up an edition which, to the best of my knowledge, has hitherto escaped the notice of bihliographers. Acquaintances, friends, and relatives had visited many libraries in Spanish America for me, specifically in Havana, Mexico City, Montevideo, and Buenos Aires. Lima 1 reserved to myself. In the card catalogue of the Departamento de Investigaciones Bibliográficas ia the Biblioteca Nacional del Perú 1 found a reference to the new edition: calle no. X 946.9/G 68. I n its present state the little chapbook consists of 14 leaves. As cut it measures 18.5 by 14 cm. I t is bound in an attractive modern binding of the type called by the personnel of Lima's ilatiorial library "encuadernación es- pañola''. In addition to the end papers, there is one blank leaf before the origi- nal leavcs, and 41 blank leaves following the book. On the spine the following is stamped in gold: G. DE SAN / ESTEBAN / LIBRO DEL / INFANTE / DON / PEDRO / B. N. / In order io protect the book the binder was forced to cover both sides of the first and Iast leaves with a transparznt gummed paper called "papel glacine". He also used this substance as a border about 2.75 cm. wide coming in from the spine on each side of each leaf, and also as a border about 3 cm. wide coming ni from the ~ u t e r edge on each side of the two center leaves. As a result of this protection ihe picture on the title-page is indistinct, and it is impracticable to make photographs or a microfilm of the text. The Biblioteca Nacional acquired the chapbook unbound in May, 1951, Fénix: Revista de la Biblioteca Nacional del Perú. N.10, 1954
